Week 2 - Malaeimi, American Samoa
Malo Lava!
First week in Samoa man. the mission ain't no joke. still don't know what people are saying for the most part.. don't have enough vocab down and the way people speak is much different than the written language. Good thing though the people are all saints. super nice and super respectful. We will be walking down the road and people will come up to us with a bag of food they just bought for us or they will just hand us cash.
We are teaching this sweet old lady right now named Emi.. she is committed to be baptized in a couple weeks. This week we are baptizing a massive dude named Tasi.. I have been there for a couple of his lessons and I am able to give a simple testimony and one sentence explanations of some principles but that's about it. However, I am learning and I'm not gonna give up. "I will go and I will do".. the Lord didn't call me to Samoa to fail. he called me to teach his people and bring them the gospel. In order to do that I need to speak Samoan. so I know that I will pick it up soon. having faith and humility is everything out here man! It is hard though because my companion only has two months left and he is pretty much the g.o.a.t at the language and teaching lessons, but he can't speak English that well and he isn't patient with me at all. I will ask him how to say something and then he will say it lightning fast and I will ask him to repeat it and he gets frustrated with me easily. I am telling you sometimes I just wanna hit something it gets so frustrating hahah. but small and simple things...
I memorized Alma 37:6 and D&C 12:8 fa'asamoa ("in Samoan") because those scriptures are the "culture of this mission" and our president expects us to know them by heart. "small and simple things" "no one can assist in the work.. humble, full of love, faith, hope, charity". good stuff. Anyway about Tasi, I get to baptize him! so i need to memorize the prayer fa'asamoa. I am excited. Next thing to memorize is the first vision.
Also, some general authority or something (i don't really know) but someone said that if you read the entire Book or Mormon in your mission language you will be fluent. So I have calculated it and I will finish the entire Tusi a Mamona by the end of April next year. so watch out ya bois abouta be fluent.
Anyway, My testimony is getting stronger every day. Testifying and teaching about the gospel just reinforces what I know to be true every day. It is incredible. Teaching especially about the Gospel of Christ, the restoration, and the Book of Mormon.. It's all true. I look forward to becoming more converted as time goes on. More pictures next week stay tuned.
